Aquatic drone swarms for military and research purposes

Aquabotix, an underwater robotics company operating in Australia and the U.S., recently released a hybrid between a ‘micro unmanned surface vehicle’ (USV) and an ‘unmanned underwater vehicle’ (UUV) or simply put; an underwater drone, like the MantaDroid we’ve seen earlier. The vehicles operate in swarm and they’re called SwarmDivers™. They are able to function simultaneously as a single coordinated entity, they can be controlled by a single operator and they can perform (vertical) dives to collect valuable data and intelligence.

Compact LIDAR unit on show at Commercial UAV Expo Amsterdam

Across many industries, the advantages of data gathering via drones are well known. A surveying method called ‘LIDAR’, which stands for ‘light detection and ranging’, is an effective tool to gather crucial data for a variety of applications. It measures the distance to a target by illuminating the target with pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. The differences in return times and wavelengths are then used to make 3D representations of the target.

Mounting such a LIDAR unit onto a drone has often proved to be a bit of a challenge however. For this reason, 3D Target has developed a solution to this problem.

What if you encounter an unwanted drone presence?

The increasing presence of drones in airspaces means this brings an increase in security, safety and privacy concerns for authorities, but for the general public and businesses as well. Left unchecked, without proper legal and safety regulations, these concerns could turn into serious security, safety and privacy threats.

On the other hand, work is being done in Europe to ensure a legal framework that assists in the safe integration of drones into the airspace, but that still offers no guaranteed compliance from drone operators. So for this reason, there are companies who have developed counter measure technologies to deal with unauthorized or illegal drone presences. In this article, we take a look at some of the interesting technologies out there.

Learning how to fly a drone... with a simulator?

UAV, RPAS, UAS... or simply a 'drone' as most of us know it. Whatever you wish to call it, the drone industry continues to grow and expand every day. And so does consumer interest, with more and more commercial drones being released onto the market.

We can distinguish three types of commercially available drones: camera/inspection drones, racing drones and toy drones. Each with differing price ranges, from a $50 drone up to drones in the $20,000 range and beyond.

Either way, it is essential to learn and know how to fly a drone. But wouldn't it be great if you could learn how to fly a drone before you purchase one?
